2017 in Review ...

What a year it's been!
Some Athlete Highlights for the year ...

• Nikki Wynd competed for Australia in Ireland at the World 24 hour ultra marathon championships
• Anthony Vaitohi (14) - Pictured right, is National U15 100 & 200m sprint champion. After being 2nd & 3rd at All schools late in 2016 just as he started with the squad, 3 months he later won gold in both the 100 & 200m at 2017 AA Nationals in March. He backed it up in 2017 at Dec All Schools winning national medals even though he was junior age competing in U16’s against older athletes. Antonio is currently training to make the U15 ALAC squad & AA 100/200m sprints in March 2018. Tessa, Antonio’s mum does a lot of his coaching in Shepparton & has given him an excellent foundation of T&F skills
• 3 players drafted into the AFL in the last 12 months : Dylan Clarke (19) & Trent Mynott (18) to Essendon & Jack Maibaum (19) to Sydney. That makes 5 players in total playing professional sport.
• Amber Clarke (12) has won medals at LA Vic, All Schools, PSG in sprints & hurdles. Set a State hurdle record along the way. Amber is coached by David Thomson in hurdles. Long term she may end up playing women’s AFL & is currently at RSA in their AFL program. Actually, I would be very surprised if she didn’t make it into women’s AFL!
• Daniel Doyle (14) medalled at State & made T&F Nationals for the first time. He has been recruited to play with Sth Melb FC
• Monique Larose (16) made her first State final, State medal, is continually running PB’s & has qualified for Nationals for the first time - which have all been her long term goals. Monique is also an assistant coach helping out with the track & field squad. Beautiful sprint technique & my go to demonstrator for all things movement related.
• Dharam Deol (14) won state steeplechase & made 7th at Nationals, PB’s both times. Dharam has improved massively over the last 12 months & is continually setting PB’s in every event he competes in
• Sisely Rosano (12) achieved her first State medal in the 100m at All Schools & made the PSG 100m sprint final as the fastest Vic girl, won a relay medal at PSG as part of the Vic team. Sisely when she joined the Smash sprint squad was barely making sprint finals in the 100m - now she is winning medals at State All Schools & was the fastest Vic girl at PSG
• Calvin Dariao (17) - Eastern Ranges senior age player improved from 8.4 to 8.015s in the AFL agility test & from 3.18 to 3.04s in the 20m sprint after a 10 week program. For anyone who has worked with AFL athletes, these are staggering improvements in such a short time. The trick is to work on sprint & agility technique, power & plyometrics at the same time. Changing anyone’s sprint mechanics in their late teens is an art form.
• Lester Long (12) improved almost metre in long jump (thanks to Steve Morris), made the PSG sprint final & won a gold PSG relay medal. Lester’s PB’s have dropped massively this year in his first full year in the squad. Lester competes & is competitive at the State level in a wide range of events from 100, 200, 400, hurdles & long jump. He also does more chin-ups (17) than I do which is excellent for a 12 year old!
• Hudson McKay (10) made the PSG sprint final & medalled in PSG relays
• Tyson Nagel (10) medalled at State & made National cross country championships, gold in the team 1500m championships for team Vic
• Elise Keeghan (11) setting 30m+ PB’s in discus. Medalled at State in March.
• Lara Hecker (12) improved her shot from 5 to 7m after 1 session in shot put. Equalled a 30 year Donc LA LJ record
• The Knox U14-15 relay girls won gold in the mixed age medley at State relays : Hannah Hodges, Harini Jeevaraj, Kailani Tikfesi & Amber Clarke. The State record was a chance but didn't quite make it. All the U15 girls made it to State : Sarah Ternes & Yathiksha Yogaraj
• Knox LA came 2nd on the medal table for State Relays in Dec 2017 with 6 gold, 7 silver & 2 bronze (with more medals overall than 1st placed Keilor) - 1st step in being overall top centre in the State again ...
• All the regular attending athletes in the squad who are setting PB’s this season : Jordan Drescher, Jay Stephan, Alex Karaiskos, Jarrod Long, Zoe Renton, Jake Phipps, Lachie Monteath, Elise Carberry, Reeve Evans, Liri Rosano, Judd Nagel, Jennifer Lee, Mitch Pentreath, Arunja Manchanayake, Acthintha Jayawantha

Thanks to interns : Meghan & Sarah who have assisted with coaching throughout the year & worked for free as part of their sport science accreditation. Meghan has now finished her sports science degree will be working ongoing with as a paid Smash coach in 2018 (and doing her honours too).
Thanks also to Monique who works as an assistant T&F coach with the sprint squad while training herself and is going through the trials of year 11-12.

Some Personal & Organisational Highlights :

• Head coach Mike was LA Vic coach of the year for 2017
• Knox LA Vic was the top performing centre of the year taking into account : relays, multi, T&F & cross country : thanks to all the great Knox coaches. Knox LA has won this 6 years out of the last 10.
• Mike presented for the ATFCA twice in 2017 : Sprints & Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD)
• Head coach Mike is now an accredited IAAF Lvl 3 sprints, hurdles & relay coach. This is an internationally recognised qualification & currently the highest level of coaching accreditation available for track & field coaches worldwide working with junior athletes. Thanks to the excellent quality convenors & presenters on the course : Nik Hagicostas & Steve Cain. Great course.
• Mike has just been appointed a State team leader (coach & selector) for the upcoming Australian Little Athletics Championships (ALAC) and will be travelling with the Vic team to Qld in April for Nationals.
• Mike is in charge of the sprints program in the Junior Development Program (JDS) with 400+ athletes. This is the primary talent identification system for junior track & field athletes in Victoria. The majority of State medalists come through the JDS system
• Mike designed & implemented the new testing program for the LA Vic JDS squad
• Mike ran 3 ITCC clinics for LA Vic
• Mike is also part of the coaching & education committee at LA Vic which sets policy & guidelines for coaches & officials for all LA Vic centres in the State.
• Smash has had multiple athletes compete & win gold & other medals nationally & internationally at the highest levels possible for junior athletes of the ages since inception
• Smash has had multiple athletes / teams set State & National records since inception
• Smash has had 3 athletes drafted into the AFL to play professional sport over the last 12 months (5 in total)

When I started coaching over 15 years ago, I would never have dreamed that I would be coaching professionally and achieve any of the above & assisting athletes to improve & perform so well. I’m struggling to think how things could get better for 2018, but I’ll be trying.

Thanks to everyone for being part of the journey & here’s to more PB’s, Medal, Records & Championships in 2018

dylan• SMASH had 2 more players get drafted into the AFL from the National Draft Combine :
Dylan Clarke
(Essendon) & Jack Maibaum (Sydney).
That makes 4 players in total who have been through the Smash system and drafted into the AFL to play at the highest level.
Dylan & Jack are both from the Eastern Ranges TAC Cup side & played Vic Metro. Dylan was the No 1 contested player in the TAC Cup in 2016.

On Dylan From Fox Sports (by Ben Waterworth) : Numerically, the Eastern Ranges ball magnet has been one of the most consistent underage on-ballers of 2016, enhancing his draft prospects with nearly every game he’s played across all levels. From the Essendon website : Clarke won All Australian honours after averaging 24 disposals a game during the national championships, with more than half those touches won in contested situations.

maibaumOn Jack from the Swans website : Maibaum was named All Australian full-back after a consistent and steady NAB AFL Under-18s championships for Vic Metro. He was able to shut down some of the better tall opposition forwards with a minimum of fuss, and has closing speed when they get away on the lead. The Eastern Ranges backman is calm and collected when in possession of the ball, but is best as a stopping key defender who sticks to his task. He came second in the agility test at the NAB AFL Draft Combine.

- parkour, falling & acrobatics skills
- falling & combat rolling

More special & fun clinics to come every term.

SMASH Staff at the AFL National Draft Combine
combineMike & Stuart, SMASH directors were called in to troubleshoot at the AFL National Draft Combine to run the timing on speed and agility testing day. With no advance warning and zero preparation they rushed in to Etihad and the rest of the day ran faultlessly. Thats 3 years in a row, courtesy of Fusion Sport, we have been at the combine testing the top 100 AFL prospects in the country. Many would benefit from doing either Speed & Agility or Combine Preparation programs as their technique was, shall we say, holding them back ...

SMASH Coaches in Action

SMASH trained coaches have provided the testing, athletic development & strength and conditioning programs to Rowville Sports Academy at Rowville Secondary College for the last 3 years. RSA is one of 3 secondary schools running major sports programs in Victoria with 600 athletes. Sports covered are : AFL, basketball, golf, netball, soccer & volleyball. Cricket is joining the program in 2016. We also test & screen Rowville Institute of the Arts (RIA).

SMASH head coach Mike has taken on JDS duties for LA Vic - coaching sprints. The Little Athletics Junior Development Squad (JDS) gives U12-U16 athletes an opportunity to train with many of Victoria's leading T&F coaches. Athletes need to meet qualifying standards to join the program. Emphasis is on improving technical competency in the athletes chosen T&F event.

SMASH trained speed & agility coach, Keegan Ziada has been appointed the Athletic Development and S&C coach for the Eastern Ranges. Keegan is a qualified masters degree exercise physiologist working full time professionally in the high performance sports industry. Many of the Eastern Ranges players train at RSA and are exposed to the Smash athletic development programs and Smash trained coaches. They have played off in 2 grand finals in the last three years, winning one.

SMASH head coach, Mike in the 2 years he was in charge of the Rowville Junior Football Clubs fitness - the EFL club had the most A division teams in finals, the most teams in grand finals and won the most premierships.

SMASH head coach, Mike coached the MLC Girls School Victoria (GSV) T&F team. That year after never having won the championship, they not only won but increased their medal count in the All Stars final from 4 to 44 medals (an amazing 11 fold improvement).

SMASH head coach, Mike prepared the Trinity Grammar 1sts teams in their pre-season. In that year they won their first AFL final in 36 years, also won T&F, improved from 3rd to 2nd in cross country & from 6th to 2nd in soccer.

SMASH head coach, Mike while in his original stint as Director of Coaching at Knox Little Athletics, Knox won for 5 years in a row more medals at State than any other centre in Victoria. There are 120+ centres in the state and often Knox would win double the medals of the 2nd best centre in the State. An amazing feat that is unlikely to ever be repeated. Thanks to the many other coaches at the centre because it was certainly a fantastic team effort. Knox is also the current 2017 State Track & Field Champions & also won the award as the best performing centre in all State events in 2017 - track & field, multi-event, relays & cross country.

Recent Athlete Performances & Highlights (newest first)

Jordan Munyard - Newly crowned national sprint champion! At the all schools national championships on Sat Dec 2015, Jordan ran a PB of 10.94s for 100m to win the blue riband event in T&F to become the fastest U16 in the country. Jordan let the field know that he was serious when he won his heat and then ran faster again to win the final. He was the fastest U18 Victorian too and would have come 4th in the U18 final.
Jordan only trains 3 times a week and still does a lot of non-specific general training to build a solid all around base of general athleticism. As we move his training program into high performance & progressively more sprint specific with harder S&C work his times are obviously expected to drop further ...
A few weeks ago he set the State record for U16's at 10.95s, 0.51s faster than the previous record set only last year. Knox record up to U19's. Fastest U16 & U18 in the State. 3rd fastest in the State for all ages including open men. AV Rankings here. And he only just turned 15.

Chloe Beovich (U15 Girl) breaks the State Hammer Throw record at All Schools in Nov 2015 at Lakeside! That's 2 years in a row!

Julia Byrne (U18 Girl) gets a silver at State Hammer Throw for U18 girls. Both Julia & Chloe get automatic qualification for nationals.

The U13 Knox Relay Girls in the LA Vic relay team - 3 gold at Region, 8 of the 9 girls medalled and all teams & girls progressed to State. Great effort from the team.

The Knox Region relay teams (where head SMASH coach Mike is Director of Coaching) top the Eastern Region with most gold & most medals.

Ryan Clarke has been drafted to AFL club North Melbourne. Immediately after being drafted he flew off to their high altitude camp in Arizona with the rest of the team. Good luck Ryan and we all hope you have a long AFL career. Hopefully with his first pay from the kangas he can get himself a decent haircut!
Ryan has worked with the SMASH coaches for several years in both gym and speed / agility and ran under 3.0s in the 20m sprint at the recent National AFL combine. Ryan was primarily a middle distance athlete and to get his sprint time to under 3 seconds at the combine was a great achievement. Ryan had one of his best ever years playing in the 2015 Eastern Ranges TAC team as a senior age player. (SMASH trained coach Keegan Ziada is the current S&C coach for the Ranges). The Eastern Ranges have had a great last 3 years - premiers in 2013 & runner up in the grand final this year. Ryan also polled very well in the TAC B&F (Morrish Medal) even though he only played 8 games due to school AFL commitments. Ryan has been in the media also. Draft profile here. His brother Dylan was a junior age player in the Ranges senior side this year also. If things go as planned, Dylan is looking to follow his older brother into the AFL. Ryan is the 2nd Smash trained athlete to get drafted into the AFL. Dozens of SMASH trained junior AFL players have been selected to play in TAC cup sides at all levels.

Rebecca Donato competes at the International ANAC Championships in San Diego, USA in Aussie national gymnastics team. 11th in preliminaries & 13th in finals. Great performances at the world elite level from a dedicated athlete who trains double the hours of most elite athletes her age (excepting other gymnasts!). 4 weeks after competing in the US, Bec backed up again by qualifying for the Aussie national gymnastics team for world championships next year.

Jordan Munyard from the SMASH Performance Squad wins gold in both the 100m & 200m sprints at State T&F for the 3rd year in a row. Two silver medals in the 100m & 200m behind James Gallaugher but well ahead of the rest at Nationals. Also entered in the junior Stawell gift at Easter and ran off scratch as the fastest junior athlete in the field! In the 2014/15 season, Jordan broke all the Knox club records for the 200m up to U20's (while only 14). And two of the older athletes records he broke had gone to world youth. Jordan also won both the 100m and 200m at Little Athletics State Track & Field. See Jordan in action winning the 200m U16 final at State in a dominating performance.

bec1

Rebecca Donato wins gold at Aerobic Gymnastics Nationals in 2014! Makes the Australian squad for International competition with Gymnastics Australia in San Diego in July 2015. Also makes Artistic Gymnastics national level 10 (the highest level). Bec is 16 and trains 6 times and over 20 hours a week in 2 gymnastics disciplines as well as dance. She is supported by the great physio staff and does does pilates at Rowville Physiotherapy and injury prevention work with Smash. She has been with Knox Gymnastics and Aerobics Gymnastics for many years. Thanks to Brit Portelli as the founding coach who started a revolution.

relaygirls

Chloe Beovich (U14 Girl) broke the State Hammer Throw record at All Schools in Nov 2014 at Lakeside!

The U12 Girls in the Knox LA Vic relay team - 3 gold at Region and a silver, bronze & 4th at State Relays in Dec 2014. Well done Bec, Keelin, Kate, Harini & Hannah.

Many other medals at State relays from individually trained Smash athletes :
Jordan Munyard, Lachlan Viney, Josh Spurrell & Blake Tahlambourris.

All coached by Smash head coach Mike. Great work girls (and boys).

David ThomsonDavid Thompson : A Determined & Inspirational Journey
- From Cancer to World Championships

Thanks to all those who attended at David's fundraiser. It was a great success!
David was a founding SMASH squad athlete almost 10 years ago winning 2 State multi-event championships. He just made the Australian Team for the World T&F Junior Championships in Decathlon. David had a battle with cancer in 2011 and made an unbelieveably gutsy & inspirational comeback this month.
Read his story here. Picture: Jake Nowakowski, Source: News Limited

davidtoregon"Less than three years ago Thomson was fighting for his life when a large carcinoid tumour was found in his right lung. Doctors were able to save his life by removing most of the lung — but without the ability to fully breathe, it seemed Thomson’s promising athletics future had also been cut away."

Update : On the 22nd and 23rd of July, David competed at the World Junior championships in Eugene, Oregon in the decathlon. He set 3 PB's from the 10 events and came 25th in the world with 7,025 points! His Australian teammate Cedric Dubler came 2nd overall with a great string of results.

Jordan Munyard from the SMASH Performance Squad won silver (and broke the previous National record) in the 200m & bronze in the 100m at the All School Nationals. Jordan competes against Internet sensation James Gallaugher at Nationals. He also won all 6 major State sprint titles this season (2013/14) in the 100m & 200m sprints : All Schools, LA Vic & Athletics Victoria.
He has broken the 200m State record the last 2 years in a row. He continues to lower his times (remember he was only 13 & 14 years old last season) and in Feb ran 11.35s (electronic) in the 100m smashing the Knox all time 100m record and which also would have won 100m at Nationals. Shown to the left, leading the 2014 Under 15 AV 100m State final.

Lachlan Viney from the SMASH Performance Squad as part of the State team won the National junior basketball All Schools title for Victoria! In Jan as part of the Dandenong Ranges his team won the Australia Day Tournament. Lachlan is a junior athlete of several talents as he also makes State track & field hurdle finals.

Dylan Clarke who has been doing SMASH programs & gym with us for several years won the lot in 2013: Club & EFL B&F, played in the Interleague, Eastern Ranges, Vic Metro and was selected in the All Australian team. Initially he was primarily a strong endurance athlete but with SMASH training under his belt he has improved his speed and power dramatically. He heads off to Sth Africa for the All Australian AFL International trip in early 2014.

Multiple SMASH trained athletes achieved scholarships to schools this season : Josh Spurrell - pictured to the right (Wesley), Dylan Clarke (Melb Grammar), Ryan Clarke (Melb Grammar), Jack Maibaum (Melb Grammar). Tom Barr headed off to ADFA in a career as an Army Officer.

Samantha Galagher after making State T&F championships the previous year but not making any finals joins the Smash Squad. Within 6 months she : wins State 100m, 200m, Long Jump, wins State surf life saving sprint, comes 2nd at State multi-event, wins 11 medals in GSV T&F, makes the State T&F squad (obviously) and gets a silver sprint medal at Nationals! Do you reckon the SMASH program works?

SMASH initially establishes correct and fundamental movement mechanics, patterns and skills - running, jumping, landing, general agility, coordination and balance. Once these foundations are in place then speed, strength and power are progressively layered on.

It incorporates the best and latest from evidence based sport science (ie : what has been proven to work) and refined from a decade of real world coaching experience with hundreds of children.

The SMASH program is fun, innovative and challenging for kids.

Crucial skills of sprinting, linear, lateral & multi-directional agility are vital for all sports - but not actually taught in schools or junior sport!

By teaching young athletes to move correctly it unlocks often hidden performance capability in children.

All programs are run by expert coaches and clinical health professionals.

agility

Most sports work on sport specific skills without teaching basic movement capabilities which is what kids really need to learn first!

Be your very best - enrol your child in a SMASH course now ...

sprint

SMASH your way to the next level ...
Improve your speed, strength, power, agility, coordination, balance, flexibility, core stability & more!

The SMASH system works on all aspects of performance in a progressive & structured way.

Training is suitable for individuals, clubs, teams, schools or any group of athletes.

The emphasis is initially on skill development & fundamental movement skills moving to performance based training.
